Smoke could be seen slowly rising from the concrete and rebar at the abandoned Lucaya high rise development on sunset drive at 11 Tuesday morning.

Despite fences surrounding the Kelowna property, vandals have found ways to get in and occupy the 1 storey unfinished structure.

When fire crews explored the source of the smoke, they found an abandoned rubbish fire inside among piles of personal belongings.

Platoon Captain Eric Simpson of the Kelowna Fire department described the scene inside. “its quite a large open area, with the elevator shaft in the middle but its hard to see in there right now. Lack of light and also heavy smoke.”

Fire crews thoroughly searched the building after putting out the smoldering fire.

They plan on contacting the owners to ensure the hazardous property is better secured from vandals and street people.
