Winnipeg Arena lot getting new tenants

It’s where our beloved Jets said farewell 15 years ago, then two years later, the old barn was torn down.

Since then, the gravel lot across from Canadinns Stadium has sat empty, with the exception of Bomber game days, where hundreds would park and party before the game.

Tuesday marked a new beginning for this piece of real estate.

Western Financial Group, an insurance and banking company, put the shovels in the ground on its $36 million offices and retail complex.

“Right now we’re scattered in different rented offices so this is the opportunity, great opportunity to bring everyone together in one place,” Western Financial Group spokesperson Jim Savage.

It’s a three storey, 157 thousand square feet building. The top two floors will house the company’s 370 employees, the main floor will be retail stores and restaurants although it hasn’t been announced which brands will set up shop.

“Its one of the most appealing locations, its one of most convenient for our employees, its a great place to work and the heritage of the site is meaningful,” said Savage.

As the company continued to grow, this site became the perfect fit. Construction will start immediately and it’s slated to open midway through 2013 when almost 400 employees will relocate here, but the company says parking won’t be an issue.

“The very best thing for our employees is underground parking, that’s the best thing,” said Savage.

It is an exciting new development on a piece of land that held a special place in so many hearts.

With a new era of hockey now in Winnipeg, moving on seems much easier.
