TORONTO – Icy driving conditions are being blamed for more than 100 collisions in southern Ontario’s Waterloo Region Friday morning.
The area is currently under a snow squall warning with reduced visibility on many roadways in Kitchener, Cambridge, and Waterloo.
The weather also prompted the closure of the westbound and eastbound lanes of Highway 401 in Kitchener for a period of time.
Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt tells Global News the bulk of the collisions occurred during the morning rush hour between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. which involved many fender benders and vehicles sliding into ditches.
No serious injuries were reported.
Waterloo Regional Police have advised motorists to slow down and to keep a safe distance between vehicles.
The snow squall is expected to end this evening, but not before an accumulation of between 10 to 15 centimetres of snow.
