Federal government tables bill to end wheat board monopoly in West

Wheat board supporters say farmers will suffer because the board cannot compete on the open market without the guaranteed grain supply that comes with the monopoly.

They say farmers will end up competing against each other for lower prices at the hands of multinational buyers.

The bill is expected to pass before the end of the year and is to take effect at the start of the crop year next August.
