PENTICTON – Michael Minchau has pleaded guilty to 10 criminal offenses, including forgery and theft in a case involving dozens of community mailbox thefts in the Okanagan.
In court Wednesday, Minchau was sentenced to time served since his arrest which is 270 days.
He was also put on two years probation and ordered to pay a $2,000 victim surcharge.
In handing down the sentence, the judge noted Minchau has a previous criminal record. “It is clear that he has engaged in a pattern of crime,” said Meg Shaw.
The 31-year-old man used screwdrivers to pry open community mailboxes in Osoyoos, Keremeos and Oliver.
He also altered cheques and stole vehicle license plates.
“I do feel great remorse. I’d like to apologize to anyone I’ve affected,” says Minchau. “The last 10 months has been a life-changing experience. I’ve become closer to God, my family and my mother.”
