No more warnings; Edmonton school zone speeders begin receiving tickets

EDMONTON — The grace period is over for drivers speeding past Edmonton schools with elementary grades.

Starting Thursday morning, drivers caught speeding through a 30 km/h school zone, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, will receiving a ticket starting at $78.

Edmonton police were only handing out warnings to drivers during the past two months.

Police have monitored around 40,000 vehicles since the start of the school year, with nearly half of those drivers speeding in school zones.

Police handed out 5,480 warnings during that period.

Drivers caught going 20 km/h over the speed limit will receive a $124 fine and a loss of demerits.

Earlier this year, city council voted to bring back reduced school zone speed limits for the first time since 1974.
