Since 1999, the Holiday Train has raised close to $9.5 million and 3.3 million pounds of food for North American food banks.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

What’s raised in each community stays in that community, and Canadian Pacific also makes donations at each stop.

The Holiday Train hopes to raise awareness on the importance of supporting food banks and how local families can join in the holiday spirit by making a donation.

Over the past 16 years of its existence, the train’s arrival in towns has become a welcome holiday event, often raising a significant amount of money and donations to local food banks for the year.

What happens when the train comes to town?

The Holiday Train pulls into the train station, the stage door lowers and the band opens with its first song.

The music is followed by a brief ceremony with food bank officials and local dignitaries, and then the band resumes its performance of traditional and modern holiday-themed songs.

Then the boxcar door closes, and the train makes its way to the next stop.
