Montreal off-island commuters breathe sigh of relief as A-20 reopens

Watch: Les Cèdres overpass closed on Highway 20

MONTREAL — Off -island motorists were breathing a sigh of relief Wednesday.

Highway 20 heading in the eastbound direction finally reopened to traffic after being closed for more than 24 hours.

The closure caused an enormous gridlock and traffic headaches for thousands of drivers.

Cars, trucks and all other vehicles were forced off the highway at the Saint-Féréol exit and were forced to take a ten kilometre detour.

Transports Quebec officials closed a portion of the highway after engineers found a crack in  the Saint-Grégoire overpass.

Part of the structure had to be demolished and all vehicles were diverted off the highway.

Over 21,000 motorists use this portion of road every day and it’s considered a vital link for commercial trade, as tons of merchandise is carried by trucks along this portion of highway where drivers can link up with the A-30 taking them to the South Shore.

The Saint-Grégoire overpass is undergoing major repairs and remains closed to traffic.

Transports Quebec officials said they’re hoping the structure will be repaired by the end of the year.
