TORONTO — City Councillor James Pasternak
is taking aim at one of Mayor Ford’s first political victories – cutting out
free snacks for councillors. Ahead of the 2012 budget meetings, Councillor
James Pasternak is hoping to reinstate the program – A motion the Mayor’s
office will certainly not support.

Though the program only saved
$48,000, it has been a symbolic victory for Mayor Ford.

Mayor Ford came into power
promising to cut the “gravy” from City Hall and one of his first moves was to
get rid of the program that gave councilors food and drink during council
sessions.

Councillor Pasternak argues that
bringing back the snacks during council sessions would allow Councillors to
stay on track. “There’s millions of dollars in the balance. Do we really want
to see a vote go one way or another because someone slipped out for a coffee?”
Pasternak said at City Hall today.

Pasternak’s attempt to reinstate
the program is also raising the ire of other Councillors.

“What I see are a group of
Councillors and a Mayor who are still obsessed with the things that don’t matter.”
Gord Perk’s, City Councillor for Ward 14, said today.
