TORONTO – As millions celebrate Halloween this year, mosques around Australia open their doors to non-Muslims as part of a government initiative to “shake away misconceptions” about the faith.

Here’s a look at some of the week’s most heartwarming photos.

This dog…dressed as Batman:

Crusoe the Dachshund is top dog at dressing up. The wiener dog is heads and paws above anyone else at donning quirky disguises. Crusoe is the cherished pet of Ryan Beauchesne, 26, from Ottawa who, along with girlfriend Laurence Dionne, 25, creates handmade costumes for the pampered pooch.  (For a gallery of dogs in Halloween costumes, click here)

These girls taking a photo:

On Oct. 25, mosques across Australia opened their doors to non-Muslims to dispel misconceptions about Islam and encourage understanding between the Muslim and non-Muslim communities.

This Hello Kitty cake:

In celebration of the character’s 40th anniversary, this Hello Kitty cake was created by expert cake artist Sarah Hardy and her team. Towering at 5 feet tall, this treat comes complete with a stylish purple and pink dress and an edible ruby bow. The cake took over 100 hours to complete and features over 80 edible jelly gems, 10 iced colourful teddy bears, and contains over 36kg of icing, 5kg of flour, 20 vanilla pods and 60 eggs.

Dallas nurse Nina Pham meets U.S. President Barack Obama:

President Barack Obama meets Nina Pham in the Oval Office of the White House October 24, 2014 in Washington, DC. Pham, a nurse who was infected with Ebola from treating patient Thomas Eric Duncan at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas and was first diagnosed on October 12, was declared free of the virus on last week.

This sea otter pup being bottle fed:

A California sea otter pup was rescued by Monterey Bay Aquarium after being reported alone on a beach in Santa Barbara on September 15. She was cared for by the Aquarium staff until Wednesday Oct. 29, when she was transported to SeaWorld for long-term care. The pup is now six and a half weeks old and is said to be in good health. She is being hand raised in the nursery at Otter Outlook but eventually will be introduced to four other female sea otters at SeaWorld.
