TORONTO – Toronto police have released video footage of a man being shot dead in a “brazen,” targeted attack in the city’s north end Thursday night.

Jamal Roache, 26, was shot six to eight times in front of a plaza on Keele Street near Sheppard Avenue West.

Police say the suspect and a driver were waiting for Roache in a dark-coloured Honda Civic as he was leaving the pool hall inside the strip mall at 3306 Keele St.

The footage shows the suspect exiting from the passenger-side door of the Civic, running up to the victim and shooting several times before running back to the car. The car then drives away.

A second, close-up shot shows Roache trying to get away after he has already been shot, while the suspect fires several more rounds into him. Police say he died on the spot.

“It’s a brazen attack,” Det. Sgt. Steve Ryan said during a news conference Saturday. “Eleven-thirty at night. Fortunately there was nobody in the stores, but there very easily could have been. So we’re fortunate we just had that one casualty.”

Police are appealing for witnesses – or anyone who can identify the gunman – to come forward.

Investigators would also be “very interested” in speaking with the driver of the Honda Civic, said Ryan.

“He or she may not have known what was happening,” he said.

Roache is survived by his mother, who is “distraught,” said Ryan.
