REGINA – Two anti-gay advocates spent the day in provincial court charged with mischief.
Bill Whatcott and Peter LaBarbera were arrested April 14 after refusing to leave the University of Regina campus.
Court heard that campus security felt the pair were displaying images that contravened the U of R’s respectful workplace policy. Regina police officers were called in to help.
According to the crown prosecutor, if found guilty, Whatcott and Labarbera could face a maximum of six months behind bars or a $2,000 fine.
“I am surprised with the coverage of this. Normally your mischief is reserved for a smashed window or a spray painted building or something, but I guess police always have to look at alternative ways to try and control the public and they’ve chosen to go with a mischief charge on this,” said Mike Weger, defense lawyer.
A judge is expected to deliver a decision on December 22.
