ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – A moose cull has begun today in two national parks in Newfoundland.
Parks Canada approved the hunts in Gros Morne and Terra Nova national parks because moose are eating too many young trees.

The agency said in a release today that the program is designed to improve the state of the natural environment within the parks.
Moose were introduced to the province over 100 years ago and their numbers have increased dramatically – to about 150,000 – in the absence of natural predators.
Twenty licences have been given to approved hunters in Terra Nova and 382 in Gros Morne.
