EDMONTON – A section of Highway 16 was shut down Wednesday because of deadly collision near Wabamun Lake.

It happened around 11:30 Wednesday morning at Range Road 50.

Spruce Grove/Stony Plain RCMP believe an eastbound dump truck on Highway 16 crossed the median and collided with another dump truck headed west.

“The driver of the eastbound gravel truck is deceased,” said Cpl. Colette Zazulak. “The other driver is not harmed.”

The victim has been identified as a 35-year-old man who was living in Edmonton.

The westbound lanes were shut down and traffic was being diverted.

Travel was restricted on eastbound lanes to allow emergency responders to get in and out of the scene.

“We’re trying to determine if there was a mechanical malfunction or perhaps a medical incident that caused this,” said Zazulak. “Road conditions are good, so we’re exploring all options right now.”
