The parents of young Kienan Hebert – the three-year-old Sparwood, B.C. boy who went missing last month – say they have forgiven his alleged abductor Randall Hopley.

In an interview with the CBC, Paul Hebert described how he met with Hopley immediately after his arrest and prayed he would maintain his composure in the face of the man who police believe snatched his son from the family home in the middle of the night.

“Up to the room, I was shaking, and I was worried about where it would lead up to,” Hebert told the CBC. “Then I saw him and it was a calm feeling. We were just able to talk it through.”

Hebert said he could not divulge any details from the conversation until the trial is over.

Meanwhile, the devout Baptist parents said they see no benefit in staying angry at their son’s alleged abductor, especially since they believe the kidnapping left Kienan physically and mentally unharmed.

“I believe Kienan honestly thought he was with a friend the entire time,” Hebert told the CBC. “It would be a different scenario if he was abused in any way or if he was mistreated in any way.

“We believe strongly from watching . . . Kienan actually had a good time with who he was with and did remarkably well.”

Hopley was charged with kidnapping a person under the age of 14 and is undergoing psychiatric evaluation while he remains in custody awaiting trial.
