Veterans stand guard at cenotaphs in honour of fallen soldiers

WATCH: Tributes pour in across Canada for Cpl. Nathan Cirillo

Canadians from coast to coast stood on guard at cenotaphs in honour of two Canadian soldiers who were killed this week.

In Vancouver, veterans, including retired Cpl. David Ward,  gathered at the cenotaph in downtown Vancouver to honour the service of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent and Cpl. Nathan Cirillo.

In Port Moody, former tank gunner Scott Mayert stood in the rain to send a message that “Canada is strong and proud and we won’t be afraid of attacks like this. It’s the least I could do.”

“I don’t think what happened is right,” added retired Cpl. John Wilson. “It should have never happened in this country. It was a shock to my system.”

In Port Coquitlam, 13-year-old cadet Jackson Reid paid his respects to Cirillo by standing guard at the city’s cenotaph. Veterans also paid their respects at Langley’s Douglas Park.

The tributes are part of a nationwide movement that was largely organized via Facebook pages such as this one. Tributes have taken place in VancouverEdmonton, Halifax and other cities and towns across Canada.
