Nine Canadian universities are among the Top 200 educational institutions in the world, according to an annual assessment released by a prominent British publication.

The University of Toronto has been ranked highest among Canadian universities, at No. 19, while two other schools – the University of British Columbia and Montreal’s McGill University – broke the Top 30 on the 2011-2012 Times Higher Education list, at No. 22 and No. 28, respectively.

McMaster University in Hamilton, at No. 65, also broke the Top 100. The University of Alberta claimed the final spot in the Top 100, with the Université de Montréal not far behind, at No. 104.

Queen’s University, in Kingston, Ont., ranked No. 173 on the list, which also counted the University of Victoria (No. 177) and the University of Ottawa (No. 185) among its top 200 institutions.

In total, the U.S. placed 75 universities on the top 200 list, followed by the United Kingdom with 32, the Netherlands and Germany with 12 each.

Times Higher Education judged universities on 13 performance indicators. The magazine says it is the only world ranking that examines all core missions – research, teaching, knowledge transfer and international activity – of the modern university.

While the Top 200 are broken down to give the schools a specific rank, the list ranks what it calls the world’s best 400 schools, with the latter half not receiving specific scores. Nine other Canadian universities were named in the lower half of the top 400.

This year’s methodology was slightly refined to ensure that universities with particular strength in the arts, humanities and social sciences were placed on a more equal footing with those specializing in science.
