WINNIPEG – Buildings across the country increased security after a deadly shooting in Ottawa Wednesday.

“We tend to sort of like to think that we’re immune here in Canada to these events, which makes it even more shocking than arguably in the United States,” said James Fergusson, director at the Centre for Defence and Security Studies at the University of Manitoba.

In Winnipeg police swarmed the Legislature building to help beef up security as the building stayed open to the public.

At Winnipeg’s 17 wing they also increased safety measures by cancelling an afternoon media event about their soldiers leaving for Iraq to help fight ISIS.

While these measures were all as a precaution, it has left Winnipeggers fearful.

“I just can’t imagine, I can’t imagine, it’s getting to the point now where we’re going to be scared to walk around, it’s very scary,” said Liz Bencze, who’s brother served in the Canadian Armed Forces.

“Fundamentally this is designed to create fear and it’s designed for the response to overreact,” said Fergusson.
