This day in history: October 5 Solar Temple deaths

On this day in history, October 5, 1994, 48 members of the order of the Solar Temple, an international cult, were found dead in fire-damaged chalets in two Swiss villages.

The sect members, led by Belgian-born homeopathic doctor Luc Jouret, believed they had to pass through a fiery death to be reborn on another planet in another solar system. 

 

Five more bodies were found in a charred house near Montreal, Canada, one of which was a 3-month-old baby. Leaders of the sect deemed the child to be the anti-Christ.
