Boutique office space offered up free for business affected by power outage

CALGARY – The first day back to work following the Thanksgiving long weekend was an unusual one for many downtown businesses.

Thousands of companies hit by the downtown power outage had to come up with alternative ways of doing business.

Some were able to have their employees work from home, but for others that’s not an option.

Twenty Eighty Financial Services is an accounting firm impacted by the outage.

Staff there anticipated staying home would be too distracting so they packed up their laptops and paperwork and moved to a temporary office space.

“The first option would be to take a vacation but we can’t handle taking too much time off. If we don’t work for a week we’re gonna have a hard time paying the bills, so not working was off the table. The second option is working at home… it’s hard, a lot of us have children,” says Director Kelvin Gieck.

Gieck and his crew set up shop for the week at “The Commons” – a place where entrepreneurs can rent space without the isolation of working from home.

The Commons had some extra working space and offered it up for free to affected small businesses. A handful of them took them up on the offer.
