VIDEO: Okanagan moms still get shunned for breastfeeding

It’s been called one of the most natural things in the world but Okanagan mothers say they still get shunned for doing it.

On Saturday, a group of 26 mothers and 27 babies attempted to set a record for the most moms and babies per capita to simultaneously breastfeed.

While the challenge did not shatter the world record, which is in the thousands, these mothers hoped it would shatter negative attitudes towards breastfeeding.

“I get a lot of looks from people, just disgusted looks, but I don’t really care because he’s got to eat,” said mother Karli Keirstead, who was nursing five month old baby Timothy.

One nurse touts the benefits of breastfeeding versus using formula.

“It’s human milk for human babies,” said Nancy Delgado, a public health nurse. “It’s got immune factors. It’s perfectly made with the right composition for babies.”

And moms agree, saying they breastfeed because it’s organic and natural.

“It just seemed like it’s the natural thing to do,” said mother Robyn Thompson, who was nursing five week old baby Brenna. “It’s the best food for them.”

“It’s such an important part of children’s lives I think,” said mother Aislinn O’Grady. “It’s a great way to keep them healthy.”

Some moms say it can sometimes be difficult to find a place to feed their babies.

“It’s always nice to find a place to sit that’s quiet, which can sometimes be a challenge,” said Thompson.

But others argue they have a right to breastfeed anywhere at anytime.

“I think a lot of people think you need to cover up or go to the bathroom or be somewhere where other people aren’t. I think that’s a little silly because breastfeeding is the most natural thing in the world,” said Kayla Fiorilli, who is mother to 15-month old Liam.

“I don’t eat my meals in the bathroom and I don’t think she should either. I’m not going to go do [breastfeeding] in the bathroom,” said Thompson.
