CALGARY – The voice of Alberta’s local governments has again shifted to its largest cities, with Edmonton Coun. Linda Sloan’s election Friday as president of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association.

Sloan, a third-term councillor, replaces Darren Aldous, the mayor of the central Alberta village of Breton (population 579). She defeated the mayors of Brooks and Morinville (Lloyd Bertschi, who preceded Aldous as AUMA head).

Sloan, a former Liberal MLA, becomes the first big-city president of the 284-municipality group since retired Calgary Ald. Bob Hawkesworth led the organization between 2004 and 2007.

This comes one day before the Tories elect a new leader and premier – all three finalists for the job have proposed new funding deals for Alberta’s cities, towns, villages and counties.

Aldous had been a key player in Alberta mayors’ successful fight to prevent Service Alberta from downloading to municipal police forces and parking agencies a $15-per-search fee for looking up licence plates caught by traffic cameras or parking enforcers.
