NORTH BATTLEFORD, Sask. – Three teams have been shortlisted to compete over who will build the replacement for the province’s only psychiatric rehabilitation hospital in North Battleford, Sask.
The project can now move forward to participate in the next stage, request for proposals (RFP), in the process to build the new mental health hospital and integrated correctional facility.
Brad Wall announced the project in 2011 which will replace the aging Saskatchewan Hospital North Battleford (SHNB).
After evaluating request for qualifications, all qualified proponent teams have been invited to participate in the (RFP) stage. A selection is expected by summer 2015.
The project is using a public-private partnership (P3) procurement model.
“This is a unique project and the P3 model will deliver savings for taxpayers as well as additional value through innovations in design that couldn’t be achieved through a traditional approach,” said Gordon Wyant, SaskBuilds minister.
The new facility will include 188 beds to replace the existing 156 at SHNB and an integrated 96-room correctional facility that will house male and female offenders.
Patients and inmates will be kept separate.
“This facility is an important addition to the province’s ability to provide programming to offenders with mental health issues,” said Christine Tell, Saskatchewan’s corrections and policing minister.
Construction will take place on the existing hospital grounds with completion targeted for summer 2018.
A price tag will be determined through a P3 bidding process.
