Missing hunter found on northern Saskatchewan island

CUMBERLAND HOUSE, Sask. – Mounties say a missing hunter was found on an island in northern Saskatchewan on the weekend.

On the evening of Oct. 3, RCMP heard a 33-year-old man’s boat had broken down while travelling back to Cumberland House, Sask. from a hunting trip.

He was unsure of his location and was dressed only in a sweater and pants.

RCMP were able to communicate with the missing man by cellphone which provided the GPS coordinates of an island just north of Cumberland House.

Officers contacted the local Detachment Services Assistant (DSA), who had knowledge of the area.

The DSA and her father travelled by boat to the island where they located the missing man’s boat submerged in shallow water.

At 6:25 a.m. on Oct. 4, RCMP received a call from the DSA advising the missing man had been found on the island.

RCMP say the temperature had dropped to 1 degree Celsius.

The man was taken to a medical clinic where he was described to be in good health.

Cumberland House is approximately 360 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.
