EDMONTON – Burrow café opened its doors Monday at Central Station, becoming the city’s first business to open underground as part of the LRT concourse.

Burrow has been four years in the making.

Owners say the business – which is unique in Canada – is meant to echo the established train station café culture of places like London, New York and Berlin.

Mayor Don Iveson was there to open the doors for the first time.

“As the City of Edmonton’s Central Station LRT rehabilitation and Jasper Avenue Streetscaping project took shape, the idea of the underground pedway system being more than a means to accessing transportation resonated with us,” said Burrow owner Nate Box.

“We want to create an experience that reflects the natural state of the pedway, the burrow:  a home, a gathering space, a temporary refuge.”

In addition to coffee, Burrow will offer hot cereals, egg sandwiches, fresh baked goods, sandwiches and snacks.

The shop is the latest offering from the group that runs Elm Café and Catering and District Coffee Co.
