Police make arrest after teen found stabbed at Winnipeg high school

WINNIPEG – A teenager has been arrested after a boy was stabbed Wednesday, prompting police to surround Elmwood High School as classes ended, police said Thursday.

Police arrested a 17-year-old boy shortly after a 15-year-old boy arrived at Elmwood High School suffering from stab wounds. The 17-year-old is charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The 15-year-old was sent to hospital Wednesday in critical condition but is now stable, police said Thursday morning.

The boy was stabbed in the 600 block of Chalmers Avenue but he and others made their way down the street to the school, where police were called shortly after classes ended at 3:30 p.m.

The accused teen stayed at the scene of the stabbing and waited for police, where they arrested him, the Winnipeg Police Service reported in a news release Thursday morning.

The area was swarmed with police shortly after students were dismissed for the day on Wednesday. The school was surrounded and an area of Chalmers Avenue down the block was taped off by police.

The major crimes unit continues to investigate.
