Montreal’s Jean Talon market is one of the most colourful places in the city – and the new backyard grocery store for CBC radio host Mike Finnerty.

“I’ve lived in the Point, in the Plateau and now up here, this is the furthest north I’ve lived,” the voice of Daybreak said, referring to his current Villeray home.

Finnerty fits in perfectly in the diverse hot spot where local farmers meet city dwellers hungry for freshness.

But different, colourful and diverse could also apply to the morning show Finnerty hosts.

The Daybreak program is three hours of commercial-free talk about every topic one could imagine.

From the European debt crisis to the pop culture diva du jour, Finnerty stickhandles an eclectic line-up on a wide range of topics.

“We realize that we are being paid by the taxpayer, by people, by Montrealers – and we have to provide something that is different, something that they couldn’t get otherwise,” he said.

The host knows the CBC “raison d’etre” – in fact, he’s so well-liked, they hired him twice.

Finnerty walked away two years ago to pursue a career in London – but was hired back last fall.
