Dorothy Shephard wins in New Brunswick’s Saint John Lancaster riding

Brion Robinson / Global News

Progressive Conservative Dorothy Shephard has won the hotly contested riding of Saint John Lancaster in the 2014 New Brunswick election.

The riding emerged as a race to watch in the election, as former Liberal MLA Abel LeBlanc hoped to pick up a win for the NDP.

LeBlanc won the seat for the Liberals in the 2003 election and held it until losing to Shephard in 2010. LeBlanc is likely most known for an outburst in the legislature in 2010, where he gave the middle finger to a Tory MLA, which led to his expulsion. In June of this year, the NDP announced LeBlanc would run for the party.

LeBlanc once again ran against Shephard, along with Liberal candidate Peter McGuire.

Shephard won with nearly 40 per cent of the vote. McGuire finished in second with nearly 32 per cent of the vote – LeBlanc had 23 per cent.
