iPhone 6 and 6 Plus selling out fast at Canadian retailers

TORONTO – The wait is finally over for thousands of eager Apple fans, many of whom camped out overnight in front of Apple stores across the country to get their hands on the tech giant’s latest smartphones.

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus officially went on sale at 8 a.m. local time at Apple retail stores in Canada. But the new devices sold out quickly at some Apple retail locations.

At Toronto’s Eaton Centre location the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus was sold out by 7 a.m. ET as the first in line reserved their phones. Employees estimated there were over 1,200 people in line.

Other Canadian Apple stores said they are sold out of the larger iPhone 6 Plus and have low quantities of the iPhone 6.

An Apple store employee in Burnaby, B.C. said the store had low quantities of both phones. Meanwhile an employee at Edmonton’s West Edmonton Mall location said there were still some phones in stock, but added there was still a “very long lineup outside.”

Halifax’s Apple store sold out of the 6 Plus “very quickly,” but an employee said it had a healthy stock of the iPhone 6 in all colours and capacities.

The RCMP were called to a Vancouver-area mall, after a crowd of over 1,000 amassed to buy the phone. According to a report, the officers stuck around to manage the growing lineup.

Hundreds of people lined up outside of Edmonton’s Southgate Mall, some coming as early as Thursday morning to claim their spot. Hundreds of fans also lined up outside of the Apple store at Chinook Centre in Calgary.

Earlier this week, Apple revealed that it had received more than four million first-day pre-orders for the recently unveiled iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

But demand for the new devices has exceeded the company’s initial supply, which means those who pre-ordered their devices may not receive them until October. Pre-orders for the new iPhones doubled the two-million-order record set by the iPhone 5 in 2012.

The iPhone 6 Plus is also sold out at many U.S. locations. According to a report by Business Insider, after the Apple store on the Upper West Side of Manhattan sold out of the device, the line to reserve a phone from the next shipment stretched over two city blocks.

This is the first time Apple has debuted two iPhones with different screen sizes: the iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch screen and the larger version, the iPhone 6 Plus, with a 5.5-inch screen. The iPhone 6 starts at $749, while the iPhone 6 Plus starts at $859.
