Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo partners with PlayNow.com

VANCOUVER – Getting a chance to play against Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo might be a privilege for the selected few in the hockey world, but facing off against him at a poker table is now a real possibility for anyone with a PlayNow.com account.

The B.C. government backed gambling site has announced registered users will get a chance to play against Vancouver goalie online.

But BCLC spokesman Chris Fairclough says there will also be an opportunity for their players to see Bobby Lu’s poker face in person.

“He has an account, so he can play online whenever he wants, but we will also have additional opportunities,” says Fairclough. “He’s going to have a charity tournament, like a physical [one], where you will be able to win a chance to go play with him.”

Luongo is the first hockey player to be signed by PlayNow.com.

Fairclough says the partnership with Luongo, who is known for his passion for poker, only made sense.

“He is renowned for being a poker player. He is good…Everyone knows about Roberto Luongo’s poker playing abilities.”

Quoted in a release, Luongo said poker is one of his favourite hobbies.

“I’ve always enjoyed playing poker and my competitive side is looking forward to practicing my poker skills.”

Fairclough would not comment on how much money Luongo was paid as part of the partnership, but said Vancouver’s No.1 will also appear in new advertisements and a number of player promotions for BCLC.
