EDMONTON – City police are turning to the public for help in identifying a suspect in connection with a sexual assault in south Edmonton on Thursday.

At around 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 15, police say a man on a bike approached a 19-year-old woman near the pedestrian bridge at 114 Street and Whitemud Drive. The man allegedly exposed himself and touched the woman in a sexual manner.

The investigation is still in its early stages, but police are exploring the possibility that the assault is related to several other incidents this summer and during the summer of 2010. Those incidents all occurred in southwest Edmonton, between 34 Avenue and 51 Avenue near 111 Street.

Alex Dunlop, a University student who often uses the pedestrian bridge to get to and from the Southgate LRT station, finds the news disturbing. “Even if it wasn’t related to that, that someone is doing that in the area is very troubling,” she said. “I don’t know if I’ll be using that bridge at night anymore.”

The suspect being sought is described as an Asian male in his mid 20s, approximately 5’6″ with an average build, bald, and wearing thin metal-frame glasses. In the most recent incident the suspect was riding a white mountain bike and wearing a black jacket with a zipper and long black basketball-style shorts.

Hopefully he can be captured by the police and be given proper treatment,” said nearby resident, Grant Mann. “And in the meantime, I just pray that he doesnt hurt or abuse any young women.”

Anyone with information about any of these incidents is asked to contact the Edmonton Police Service at 780-423-4567 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
