August sees boost in Saskatoon housing starts: CMHC

SASKATOON – According to a preliminary report released Tuesday by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), August housing starts in the Saskatoon Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) were up compared to a year ago.

Construction on 434 units began in August 2014 compared to 288 units in August 2013.

Broken down, 265 multi-family units and 169 single-detached homes were started last month.

CMHC said there were 193 preliminary housing starts in Saskatoon for July.

So far this year, there have been 2,386 total starts in the Saskatoon CMA compared to 1,753 the same time in 2013.

Saskatchewan’s total urban starts were at 4,605 at the end of August, up from 4,472 in 2013.

The agency’s preliminary housing starts for Canada last month were at 15,367, up slightly from August 2013.
