SASKATOON – Several University of Saskatchewan professors are protesting a document initiated by the school’s former president.

The group has launched an online petition that says the ‘Vision2025’ document threatens to override the university’s mission statement.

The document was written by Ilene Bush-Vishniac, detailing the institution’s focus on the future. Bush-Vishniac was terminated in May after controversy surrounding TransformUS and a dismissed professor.

Although Vision2025 is not yet policy, petition organizers say it was imposed on the task forces and administration as guiding principles for the university’s cost-cutting process.

“I see it as a toolkit – if you like – for the transformation of this institution from one whose goal was to offer a wide variety of challenging programs to students… to an institution where the teaching is going to be done en masse in a very limited number of topics,” said Edward Tymchatyn, a U of S mathematics and statistics professor.

The professors say the document was railroaded through university council despite many faculty objections.

A motion to rescind Vision2025 will be voted upon on Sept.18.
