The mother of the man suspected of abducting a three-year-old Sparwood boy says she’s shocked her troubled son is wanted by police.

Randall Hopley’s mother says the news her son is suspected of snatching Kienan Hebert from his home Wednesday is surprising.

“I just saw him Tuesday afternoon. He gave me a big hug. He said he was doing alright,” said Margaret Fink, 70.

“It had been a while, we hadn’t seen him. He’d gotten into trouble again and he was away and we never heard from him.”

Trouble was jailtime for a break and enter conviction.

Still, Hopley’s mother says his family doesn’t believe he would hurt a child.

“I feel really sorry for the little kid, I don’t think Randy will harm him. He’s been with the grandkids here a lot and he’s been pretty good.”

“Randy has been in trouble. But when the cops tell me, it seems like a shock to me. When Randy was here, there wasn’t anything wrong with him. He seemed to be normal when I hear things like this, it’s just a shock.”

On Thursday, Hebert’s father, Paul, thanked everyone for their help in looking for his son.

“We’re 100-per-cent hopeful that Kienan will be back safely,” he said.

On Friday, search crews continued scouring the area around Hebert’s Sparwood Heights home. They also began searching further and less probable locations, such as valleys and the Rocky Mountain wilderness.
