NEW YORK, N.Y. – Max and Lubov Azria tried to lift the weight of the world for a few moments Thursday with a light, airy spring BCBG collection at New York Fashion Week.
The soothing approach came as the Lincoln Center tents buzzed about Fashion’s Night Out, the flooding, President Barack Obama’s speech on the economy and the guilty verdict in the John Galliano anti-Semitism case.
Perhaps their touch will sink in with the retailers, stylists and editors trying to get an early feel for next season’s key looks.

BCBG’s strong suit is its dresses and that continues: A-line sundresses with fan-like pleats, barely there slip dresses and flowing scarf styles. While delicacy and modesty prevailed, there were hints of bolder sexiness with a bra-top style here and a low, open back there.
Most of the looks were rooted in chalk grey, light stone or blush pink, but pops of yellow, blue, coral and emerald green were used effectively.
The goal, the Azrias explained in their notes, was a mashup of neutrals with tribal-inspired prints and embroideries “reflecting an urban, global spirit.”
The tribal thing wasn’t too literal, though, which kept the clothes from being costumey.
There was a sporty vibe to things, too, especially the whisper-light, colour-blocked jackets with hoods and zip-up fronts, layered over cocktail party-worthy crepe dresses.
“Fluid silhouettes and weightless fabrics embody the fresh energy of the season,” the designers said.
