ASIRT investigates police conduct in case of murder victim Colton Crowshoe

CALGARY- The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called in to investigate the conduct of Calgary Police Service members, following the murder of a young Calgary man.

18-year-old Colton Crowshoe was taken into custody by CPS on the early morning of July 2, and released a short time later. Four days later, Crowshoe’s family reported him missing.

It’s believed he was last seen on the evening of July 3, as he left a friend’s home in Abbeydale. His body was found in a nearby drainage pond on July 24, and police determined he had been murdered.

Crowshoe’s family has been vocal about their disappointment in how police handled the missing person case.

“Right away he was stereotyped as a runway, he doesn’t want to be found,” aunt Danielle Crowshoe previously told Global News. “But they don’t know us, and Colton was always respectful of his father. He would never allow him to worry and never disappear without someone knowing where he was.”

The CPS has maintained that they followed protocol in the case, but asked ASIRT to look into the interactions that Crowshoe had with police officers before he went missing, as well as the conduct of police during the missing person investigation.

Statement from the Alberta Director of Law Enforcement:

Earlier today a news release was issued by ASIRT regarding its investigation into allegations made against the Calgary Police Service with respect to Mr. Colton Crowshoe. The Calgary Police Service requested that I, as the Director of Law Enforcement assign the file to ASIRT. In my role as the Director of Law Enforcement, I assessed the request and found it was within the scope of ASIRT’s mandate under the Police Act.

Bill Sweeney, Director of Law Enforcement
