OTTAWA – Sheila Copps has announced a run for president of the Liberal party -saying she’s worried it could sink into oblivion.
Copps made the announcement during a guest appearance on a Radio Canada television program.
“I am pleased to announce that I am running for President of the Liberal Party of Canada. There is much work to be done, but I am excited to join my fellow Liberals as we listen, learn and build for the future”, she said.

The one-time deputy prime minister says the Grits need to be at the centre of Canadian political debate and is against any plan to see the Liberals merge with the NDP.
“Throughout our country’s history, the Liberal Party has been at the centre of our collective identity, pragmatically finding a common path to ensure that we didn’t tear ourselves apart on ideological grounds,” says Sheila. “That bridge-building is now at risk.”
Copps says she thinks people spend too much time talking about the past instead of the future and adds she is committed to young voters.
Copps was Canada’s first female deputy Prime Minister and a served in various cabinet portfolios during her 20 years as MP for Hamilton East. Prior to her political career, Copps worked as a journalist.
Members of the Liberal Party of Canada will vote to elect a new president and executive at the Party’s biennial convention in Ottawa on January 13th-15th, 2012.
