McMaster University evacuates buildings after gas leak reported; no one injured

HAMILTON – The all-clear has been sounded at McMaster University in Hamilton after reports of a gas leak brought police and fire crews to the campus.

Hamilton police say they got a call at about 1:20 p.m. Tuesday from the university about a possible gas leak on campus.

The university says it evacuated its Tandem Accelerator Building and the adjoining General Sciences Building while the fire department investigated.

The buildings were later deemed safe and people were allowed to return. No one was injured.

The university says the incident happened when a researcher at a lab was purging a tank with nitrogen – an inert gas – and an alarm went off.

It says the researcher was following common practice but the school followed protocol by ordering the evacuation.

Some nearby streets were cordoned off and two local schools were briefly put on “hold and secure” status as fire officials investigated.

The university says traffic was back to normal by mid-afternoon.
