Teen drowns in southern Manitoba park

WINNIPEG – A summer swim has turned tragic in southern Manitoba.

RCMP say a 19-year-old man has drowned at St. Malo Provincial Park this weekend.

He was swimming when he went under the water at just after 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Police say people in the area pulled the man on to the beach and performed CPR.

He was rushed to a hospital in Steinbach by ground ambulance where he was confirmed dead at around 4:20 p.m.

STARS Air Ambulance was dispatched but a spokesperson tells Global News the team didn’t transport the victim.

RCMP are reminding people they should take be extra careful when heading into the water for a swim.

“Just swim safe,” said Const. Paul Human, with the RCMP.

RCMP had initially told media the victim was 15 years old.
