Searchers hunt for cougar that attacked toddler at Vancouver Island park

UCLUELET, B.C. – A Parks Canada spokesman says about a dozen people including conservation officers are on the hunt for a cougar that mauled an 18-month-old boy on Vancouver Island on Monday.

Renee Wissink says snares have been set at Pacific Rim National Park following the attack at a day-use area at Kennedy Lake, about 16 kilometres east of the community of Ucluelet.

Wissink says Wednesday’s search for the cougar is focused mostly in the second-growth forest and thick underbrush around the lake.

He says that if the animal isn’t caught the day-use area may be closed for the long weekend and the rest of the season.

Wissink says any cougar spotted in the area will be destroyed.

The toddler suffered undisclosed injuries and is recovering at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.
