Saskatoon police say a scammer is attempting to defraud people by telling them they have a computer virus when they really don’t.

Police say victims are receiving unsolicited phone calls from someone from an official sounding computer company.

The suspect tells them they need to repair their computer as it has error codes or viruses and offers to complete the repair over the internet or assisting the victim in installing a “fix” for the problem.

By following the suspect’s instructions, the victim actually installs a program or virus that allows the suspect to have remote access to the computer, and all contents, including personal details and bank details.

The suspect also obtains the victims credit card information to pay for the “service.”

At least a dozen complaints have been received about the scam.
