Thief steals over $1M in goods from 3,000 sq. ft. closet

TORONTO – A businesswoman in Texas had her three-storey, 3,000 sq. ft. closet robbed last week after it was featured on Good Morning America.

Dubbed the “largest closet in America,” the massive closet, which includes a champagne bar on the second floor, is packed with designer clothes, shoes, handbags, furs and millions of dollars worth of jewellery.

Closet owner Theresa Roemer told KHOU that the thief entered the home after she and her husband went out for a late dinner and forgot to set the alarm and lock the closet door.

“I keep this locked because this is my safe,” Roemer told KHOU, referring to the closet door. “If this would have been locked it would have been much harder to break because this is an inch-and-a-half thick.”

The thief, fully covered in a jumpsuit, reportedly entered the home by cutting out glass in a downstairs bathroom. They took three bags worth $60,000 each and packed them with over a million dollars worth of items.

Roemer said the thief was inside the home for a total of 40 minutes.

“[Police] say it doesn’t look like an inside job at all. They said it was very professional, like too professional,” Roemer told KHOU.

Roemer said it’s the irreplacable heirloom items that are gone that bothers her the most.

“I don’t care about all this crap. I really don’t care about this crap. I care about the stuff that was passed to me,” she told KHOU.

The closet, which cost an estimated $500,000 to build, is also used to host charity events and has helped raise millions for the Texas Children’s Hospital and other organizations.

“There was a lot of good that was coming out of this closet. It was not just a display of vanity,” Roemer told KTBS.

Police say they currently have no suspects and are investigating.
