The CRTC has given approval for a new area code for Saskatchewan – 639 (NEW).

Existing customers will keep their 306 area code and phone numbers.

With the new area code comes 10-digit local dialing.

The transition to 10-digit local dialing starts on February 25, 2013 and becomes mandatory by May 11, 2013. Only calls made from Kinoosao and Uranium City are exempt.

This means if you want to call your friend or family across town, you will have to dial the area code followed by the number.

During the transition period, callers will receive an announcement advising them to include the area code in future calls.

The addition of a new area code is necessary as Saskatchewan is expected to run out of 306 telephone numbers by August 2013.
