Heavy thunderstorms sweep through parts of southern Ontario overnight

TORONTO – Parts of Ontario were treated to some severe thunderstorms Sunday night including an unconfirmed report of a tornado near the shores of Lake Huron.

Environment Canada forecaster Jason Burford says the storm activity stretched across southern Ontario from Windsor to Kingston.

He says Ontario Provincial Police received an unconfirmed report of a tornado in the vicinity of Grand Bend, along the shores of Lake Huron.

Burford says there have also been reports of funnel cloud sightings in a couple of locations.

Some communities received a heavy dose of rain, including Windsor and parts of Toronto.

Residents in Brampton were pelted with hail Sunday night and several streets were flooded in Markham as well.

Hydro One reported several thousand people were without power in parts of southwestern and central Ontario.

There were also several flight and baggage delays at Toronto’s Pearson Airport.
