A potential disaster was averted on the Sunshine Coast when a minivan slammed into some bleachers during a local men’s baseball game last night.
According to witnesses, the minivan careened into the stands at Hackett Ball Park at about 7:30 p.m. and say a young driver may have been speeding in the 30 kilometre zone when she swerved to avoid hitting a cyclist. The driver then ended up crashing into the bleachers where approximately 15 people were sitting.
The spectators in the stands fell to the ground and their injuries are not believed to be serious.
Sally Benner, who was watching her son play when the van hit the stands, says the accident could have been worse.
“It was fortunate nobody got hurt badly,” Benner told Global News. “I’m bruised and I’m sure a lot of other people are bruised but there weren’t that many people there because the game had just started.”
Benner says the minivan ended up only one-half metre away from her and her husband.
