SAINT-JEAN-SUR-RICHELIEU – A young man died in a fiery crash following a police chase on the South Shore early Friday.

Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu police officers tried to pull the young motorist over just before midnight for what they’re calling an infraction under the Highway Safety Code.

The man, 20, refused to stop and a chase ensued.

The pursuit ended in St. Blaise sur Richelieu, a town about 13 kilometres south of St. Jean sur Richelieu, when the man lost control of his car and crashed into a tree.

He was brought to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The Surete du Quebec has taken over the investigation into the crash, as is protocol when someone dies during a police operation.
