TORONTO – A 5.9 magnitude earthquake centred near Richmond, Virginia, has been felt across the Greater Toronto Area.

Earthquakes Canada told Global News they received a number of calls about the tremor just before 2:00 p.m. EST.

The quake sent hundreds of people spilling into the streets of Washington, D.C., a block from the White House, with other buildings evacuated in North Carolina and tremors felt in New York City.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was six kilometres deep.

Parts of the Pentagon, White House and Capitol were evacuated. The quake was centred in Mineral, Virginia.
