Strong winds challenge South Okanagan wildfire fight

PENTICTON, B.C. – Public safety continues to be a concern around the Apex Mountain fire as wind continues to fuel erratic flames.

While the guards around the 344 hectare fire held overnight, the evacuation alert remains in place for 13 properties around Green Mountain and Apex Mountain Roads that have been previously identified.

The fire remains only 60 per cent contained with a crew of 15 fire fighters making continued efforts to control the blaze.

To the north of Penticton between Princeton and Summerland, the Jura fire remains 70 per cent contained and has been measured at 460 hectares. Ground and air forestry crews reportedly made good progress at containing the blaze over the weekend.

Both the Jura and Apex wildfire causes are under investigation.

A new assessment of the Boot Hill Fire, which is about 30 km southwest of Penticton near Lookout Mountain, has mapped the blaze at 101 hectares. No properties are threatened by this lightning caused wildfire.

Also known as the Nickleplate fire, the blaze is only half contained with ground work ongoing to build a guard around the perimeter.

Environment Canada is calling for 20 km/h winds in the South Okanagan and Similkameen Monday, and 30 km/h winds and a 40 per cent chance of rain Tuesday.
