On this day in history, August 18, 1963, James H. Meredith became the first African American to graduate from ‘ole miss’, the University of Mississippi in the school’s 115-year history. He overcame unbelievable obstacles to earn his bachelor’s degree in political science, including an attempt by the state’s Governor Ross B. Barnett to bar Meredith’s graduation until apparent ‘inflammatory remarks’ made by Meredith against the school were investigated. Previously, rioting broke out upon his enrollment.
