Surrey RCMP say a man charged with attempted murder has been assaulted while in custody.

Baldev Kalsi is recovering from facial injuries received on Tuesday, while he was in a pre-trial centre, where he is currently held.

Officers identified a 42-year-old male inmate as a possible suspect and are continuing their investigation.

Police say this incident does not appear to be linked to the victim’s involvement in an ongoing aggravated murder investigation (led by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team).

66-year-old Kalsi is the president of the Brookside Sikh Temple in Surrey and is accused of the attempted murder of his wife Narinder.

She was found with life-threatening injuries at the family home on Sunday and remains in critical condition.

IHIT has taken over the investigation.
